When we begin to define the terms found at the beginning of verse 6
there are these specific words used by the Holy Spirit, and for good
reason. In the words “keep away”, we find a common nautical term. The
term literally means “to unfurl the sails”. What Paul is saying here
is that we are not to sail along with an unruly or undisciplined
member. Steer clear of them Paul says, they will sail headlong into
troubled waters and you will become awash in trouble as well. Good
advise for us to remember that is repeated over and again in the
Scriptures. Be careful of your associations, because friendships have
powerful influence on direction and you are not immune to being
capsized by winds too strong to resist.
